A human rights lawyer, Sirine Khoury, told Elaph that the prosecutor general has rejected changing the charges against Communist activist Fateh Jamous, who is still facing life imprisonment and a possible death sentence. (Arabic. 6/25/06).
Last week, Ammar Qurabi of the National Organization for Human Rights released a statement that a judge in Damascus had ruled Jamous be charged with disseminating exaggerated false news that weaken the nation's morale, which only carries a sentence of six months in prison. (Arabic. AKI, 6/19/06).
The Syrian authorities had arrested Jamous in May upon his return to Damascus from a trip to Europe. He has since been detained and has been subject to physical abuse.
